BAE Systems nets $18m contract to overhaul USS Princeton

The US Southwest Regional Maintenance Center has awarded BAE Systems San Diego Ship Repair an $18.8 million contract for the overhaul of US Navy cruiser USS Princeton (CG 59).

The San Diego-homeported Ticonderoga-class cruiser is set to complete works under the selected restricted availability (SRA) by September 2018.

This delivery order includes options which, if exercised, would bring the cumulative value of this contract to $19.4 million.

In addition to the cruiser contract, BAE Systems’ San Diego unit will also be responsible for the overhaul of Arleigh Burke-class destroyer USS Howard (DDG 83) and Avenger-class mine counter measure ship USS Champion under contracts awarded on December 27, 2017. Howard and Champion are set to complete their overhauls in February 2019 and August 2018, respectively.

BAE Systems San Diego Ship Repair is taking on more maintenance contracts for the growing US Navy fleet in San Diego after receiving a new floating dry dock in December 2016.

At 950 feet long and capable of lifting 55,000 long tons, BAE Systems’ new dry dock is the largest floating dry dock in California, according to the company.

USS Princeton returned to San Diego in December 2017 after concluding a deployment with the USS Nimitz Carrier Strike Group.
