Future USS Omaha visits Guantanamo en route to commissioning site

The US Navy’s future littoral combat ship USS Omaha (LCS 12) paid a four-day visit to Naval Station Guantanamo Bay (NSGB) en route to her San Diego commissioning site.

During her visit to the installation, Omaha conducted public tours of the ship on January 4, providing residents and visitors of NSGB the opportunity to board one of the navy’s newest ships to join the fleet.

The ship got underway from Guantanamo on January 6 and is headed for her homeport of San Diego, California, where she is scheduled to be commissioned on February 3, 2018 at the city’s Broadway Pier.

The future USS Omaha (LCS 12) launched November 20, as the 6th Independence-variant LCS, and was christened on December 20.

Omaha will be homeported in San Diego with sister ships USS Independence (LCS 2), USS Coronado (LCS 4), USS Jackson (LCS 6), USS Montgomery (LCS 8) and USS Gabrielle Giffords (LCS 10).

NSGB is the Navy’s strategic logistics installation for routine, contingency, humanitarian, counter-narcotic and migrant operations in the Caribbean.
