Canadian Coast Guard names new SAR lifeboat

The Canadian Coast Guard named a new Bay-class search and rescue lifeboat in a ceremony on December 6.

The Canadian ministry of fisheries revealed that the new boat for the Atlantic Region will be called CCGS Pennant Bay and is set to be delivered to the Coast Guard later this month.

CCGS Conception Bay, the lead ship in the class, was named in September this year.

The vessels in this class are all named after bays in Canada and are built under the Federal Infrastucture Initative and the Fleet Renewal Plan.

This new high endurance Search and Rescue lifeboat is the first vessel out of six built at Hike Metal Products in Wheatley, Ontario. Once operational, this SAR lifeboat will operate up to 100 nautical miles from shore, performing search and rescue missions.

These self-righting, 20-meter boats are powered by a pair of MTU 1600 HP marine Diesel engines providing a speed of up to 24 knots in extreme weather conditions. These vessels are primarily a day boat and will be operated by a crew of up to five Coast Guard seamen.
