Virginia submarine USS Mississippi visits Korea

US Navy’s Virginia-class attack submarine USS Mississippi (SSN 782) arrived in Jeju-do, Republic of Korea, for a port visit on November 22.

The visit comes a day after Los Angeles-class submarine USS Key West pulled into Fleet Activities Yokosuka, Japan.

Mississippi is also the first US submarine to visit South Korea’s Jeju Island.

Both submarines are currently on a deployment to the Indo-Asia-pacific region and their port visits to regional partners are routine engagements.

“The US and ROK navies share a strong partnership that is continually strengthened by routine interactions that enhance and foster our relationship,” said Rear Adm. Brad Cooper, commander of US Naval Forces Korea. “This visit will allow Mississippi crew members the opportunity to enjoy the unique culture of the residents of Jeju-do island.”

“We are honored to be the first submarine to visit Jeju,” said Cmdr. Eric J. Rozek, commanding officer. “We are also honored to have the opportunity to meet with the people of the Republic of Korea, and we believe that healthy relationships between our two nations contribute to peace in the region.”

Home-ported out of Pearl Harbor, Hawaii, the nuclear-powered USS Mississippi is capable operating all around the world.
