US Navy personnel from the Forward Deployed Regional Maintenance Center (FDRMC) Detachment Rota, Spain, completed a 60-day surface incremental availability (SIA) on destroyer USS Carney (DDG 64), Oct. 27.

“This was the second SIA conducted in Rota, Spain and continues the record of on-time availabilities dating back to the USS Donald Cook (DDG 75), completed in March 2014,” said FDRMC Commanding Officer, Capt. Gustavo Vergara.

USS Carney’s SIA consisted of a work package of 60 work items. Production work during this availability included auxiliary machinery room #1 bilge preservation; SEARAM mount replacement; gas turbine module intake preservation and module sheathing repair; flight deck safety and filler nets repair and weight tests; and refurbishment of the wardroom and lounge, medical treatment room, and ship store.

“Completion of this availability on time is extremely important, as it keeps our forward deployed destroyers fit for fleet commander’s tasking and meets Commander, Naval Sea Systems Command campaign plan line of effort to ensure the on-time delivery of ships and submarines out of maintenance availabilities,” said Vergara.

FDRMC Det. Rota maintains four homeported US Navy destroyers that are forward deployed to support the North Atlantic Treaty Organization’s (NATO’s) European Phased Adaptive Approach to ballistic missile defense in Europe.

FDRMC Det. Rota was formally established in 2013 with the mission to oversee industrial engineering and contractor services for the maintenance and modernization of four Arleigh Burke-class guided-missile destroyers in Rota — USS Porter (DDG 78), USS Donald Cook (DDG 75), USS Ross (DDG 71), and USS Carney (DDG 64).
