US to approve EMALS technology for new Indian aircraft carrier

The Indian Navy’s future aircraft carrier could be featuring the US-built electromagnetic aircraft launch system (EMALS) as the US government made a decision to share the technology with India, several news outlets in the country have reported.

The reports arose ahead of an upcoming visit of US state secretary Rex Tillerson to India.

India has expressed interest for the technology earlier, and has even informed the US government of its interest in the new technology which uses magnetic fields instead of steam to launch an aircraft. EMALS would be used on the Indian Navy’s “Indigenous aircraft carrier 2” IAC-2.

General Atomics, the company which developed and produced the EMALS, has also expressed interest in delivering its technologies to India. Additionally, the company noted that France and Japan were also interested in acquiring the technology for its future acquisitions.
