The U.S. Navy’s Norfolk Naval Shipyard has awarded Huntington Ingalls and Newport News Shipbuilding division a $36.4 million contract for work on the USS Dwight D. Eisenhower maintenance.

Under the contract, Newport News will carry out maintenance and modernization of the Ike as part of the ship’s 2017 planned incremental availability.

Work under the contract is expected to be completed by March 2018.

The U.S. Navy earlier awarded HII a $12 million contract to plan the carrier’s overhaul.

USS Dwight D. Eisenhower (CVN 69) is the second Nimitz-class aircraft carrier and the first ship named after the 34th president of the United States. The ship was launched in October 1975 by Newport News and is homeported at Naval Station Norfolk.
