First Type 209/1400 submarine ready for handover to Indonesia

Nagapasa, the first of overall three Type 209/1400 submarines to be built for the Indonesian Navy is ready for handover to Indonesia.

According to IHS Janes, South Korean shipbuilder Daewoo Shipbuilding and Marine Engineering (DSME) has completed work on the submarine and is now preparing Nagapasa for delivery which is scheduled to take place on August 2.

In addition to being the Indonesian Navy’s first Type 209/1400 submarine, Nagapasa is also South Korea’s first export submarine.

It was built under a US$1,1 billion contract signed between DSME and Indonesian defense ministry in 2011. The first two vessels will be built in South Korea while the last vessel will be built by the Indonesian state-owned shipbuilder PT PAL in Surabaya, Indonesia, under a technology transfer programme.

The 61-meter vessel displaces 1,400 tonnes and is operated by a crew of 40 sailors. DSME said the vessel has an operating range of approximately 10,000 nautical miles and reaches a speed of 21 knots while submerged.
