Spanish Navy’s sail training ship ‘Juan Sebastián de Elcano’ concluded a four-month Atlantic ocean training cruise returning to Marín (where the Naval Academy is located) on July 13.

The veteran ship was welcomed by the Academy’s Superintendent, teachers, students and family members.

During this training cruise, midshipmen from the Spanish Navy, Marine Corps and Quartermaster’s Corps received the necessary formation and training to become future officers.

In addition to the midshipmen, the ‘Juan Sebastián de Elcano’ has 24 officers, 22 NCOs, 125 leading seamen and ratings and 2 civilians, all of them under command of Captain Victoriano Gilabert.

During this cruise, the ship visited the ports of Tenerife, Santo Domingo, New York, Dublin, Den Helder and Antwerp.

Although the main task of the ‘Juan Sebastián de Elcano’ is to provide nautical training and expertise to future naval officers, the ship is also a ‘floating embassy’ and her presence abroad serves to support the Spanish foreign policy.
