US Navy contracts Leidos for AN/SQQ-89A(V)15 ASW system installation

The U.S. Navy has awarded Leidos a $27.4 million contract modification that covers costs of waterfront support and the installation of the Navy’s AN/SQQ-89A(V)15 surface ship undersea warfare systems.

The AN/SQQ-89A(V)15 is a surface ship undersea warfare combat system with the capabilities to search, detect, classify, localize and track undersea contacts, and to engage and evade submarines, mine-like small objects and torpedo threats.

As the latest variant of the integrated surface ship USW / ASW combat system, AN/SQQ-89A(V)15 incorporates hull-mounted sonar (AN/SQS-53C), wideband omni-directional receivers supporting acoustic intercept and the Multi-Function Towed Array (MFTA), also integrated with an acoustic intercept capability.

According to the U.S. Navy, it expands sensor performance by building on Open Architecture Level 3 Commercial Off the Shelf (COTS) processing. The AN/SQQ-89A(V)15 also incorporates expanded active processing capability with the integration of Echo Tracker Classifier (ETC) for both the hull sensor and MFTA.

Thirty five destroyers and cruisers (32 DDGs and 3 CGs) have received AN/SQQ-89A(V)15 back-fits as of 22 December 2016.

Leidos will perform work on the contract in several U.S. ports and in Japan and Spain.
