Indian Navy tests BrahMos land attack missile

The Indian Navy announced it has carried out a maiden firing of the land attack version of the BrahMos supersonic cruise missile.

This missile has been in service with the Indian Army since 2007 but this is the first launch of the missile from an Indian Navy ship.

The navy said BrahMos was fired from the Indian guided missile frigate INS Teg off the eastern coast, on April 21.

Jointly developed by India and Russia, BrahMos has been in service with the Indian Navy since 2005 in the anti-ship version. The majority of Indian Navy frontline ships, like the Kolkata, Ranvir and Teg classes of ships, are capable of firing this missile.

The land attack variant of the missile will enhance the Indian Navy’s capability to neutralise selected targets deeper inland and far away from coast.
