Russian fourth Yasen-class nuclear submarine passes pressure hull tests

Russian nuclear submarine Krasnoyarsk, the fourth Yasen-class submarine, recently completed hydraulic pressure hull tests, the boat’s builder announced.

The nuclear-powered Project 885 attack submarine is being built by the Sevmash shipyard in Severodvinsk, Russia.

The first submarine in the class, Severodvinsk, was delivered to the Russian Navy in 2013, twenty years after it was laid down in 1993. Following sea trials, the submarine was commissioned in 2014.

Russia’s remaining five submarines in the class are built under an improved design called Yasen-M. The first Yasen-M boat was laid down in July 2009.

St. Petersburg-based Malakhit Central Design Bureau is responsible for the submarine design.

According to a report by the USNI News, the U.S. Navy is so impressed with the 13,800-ton submarines that Rear Adm. Dave Johnson, NAVSEA’s  program executive officer for submarines, had a model of the Severodvinsk built for his office.
