UK MOD contracts Amec Foster Wheeler for Naval Nuclear Propulsion Programme work

The UK Ministry of Defence has contracted Amec Foster Wheeler to support its Naval Nuclear Propulsion Programme (NNPP) with research and technology (R&T) services.

The work is worth approximately £35m over five years and will sustain about 70 jobs at Amec Foster Wheeler’s offices and laboratories in Warrington and Dorchester in the UK, the company said.

“Long-term investment in innovative research and technology like this is absolutely essential to ensuring that Britain’s nuclear programme remains cutting-edge,” Defence Minister Harriett Baldwin said. “Underpinned by the UK’s rising Defence budget and £178 billion 10 year equipment plan, this new deal will help protect Britain and secure scores of highly skilled jobs in Warrington and Dorset.”

The R&T contract covers critical areas of capability such as materials performance, materials science, modelling, code development, thermal hydraulics and non-destructive testing and examination.

Amec Foster Wheeler has provided support to the NNPP for several decades and this new contract secures that arrangement.
