Indian Navy to receive second Scorpene submarine by year-end

The Indian Navy launched the second Scorpene-class submarine during a ceremony held at Mazagon Dock Shipyard Limited on January 12.

The launching ceremony of INS Khanderi was attended by India’s defense minister and navy and shipyard officials.

According to the Indian Navy, the submarine is expected to be delivered by the year end.

INS Kalvari, the lead ship in the class is currently undergoing trials and is likely to be commissioned into Navy by mid 2017.

Khanderi has been christened after her predecessor, a former Foxtrot-class submarine decommissioned in 1989.

India’s Mazagon Dock Shipyard Limited is currently building six Project 75 Scorpene submarines under a transfer of technology agreement with French shipbuilder DCNS.

Scorpene submarines are also being built by Brazil while Poland and Norway are considering acquiring the submarines.
