Indian Coast Guard Samarth-class OPV launched in Goa

Indian shipbuilder Goa Shipyard Limited (GSL) has launched the sixth and final Indian Coast Guard offshore patrol vessels (OPV), in Goa on November 30.

The indigenously designed and built OPV is named ICGS Sujay and measures 105 meters in length.

GSL has so far delivered three vessels in the class to the coast guard with delivery of the third one taking place in August this year.

The Samarth-class OPVs are powered by twin diesel engines and carry four boats for boarding party operations. Main weaponry consists of one 30 mm gun and two 12.7 mm guns with associated fire control systems.

Indian Coast Guard will use the vessels policing and patrolling of the Indian exclusive economic zone. The ships are also capable of other Coast Guard functions like search & rescue operations, pollution control and external fire-fighting.

They will also be deployed for ocean surveillance and for monitoring sea lanes of communication. The ships are capable of supporting embarking and operating a light helicopter.
