Australian second Collins-class submarine visits Tasmania

HMAS Farncomb, Royal Australian Navy’s second Collins-class submarine, pulled into Tasmania for a five day port visit during a recent south-east Australia deployment, allowing family and friends to explore life onboard a submarine.

The visit was the first time many of the ship’s company had a chance to show loved ones what their day job entails.

Electronic Warfare Officer, Lieutenant Kristy-Ann Youd, who hails from Caveside, Tasmania, invited her mother, aunt and former teacher, and family, onboard for a personal tour of the Collins Class submarine.

Aside from providing tours to special groups while in port, the ship’s company also had a chance for some respite.

The Australian Navy operates a total of six Collins-class submarines which entered service between 1996 and 2003. They are set to be replaced by 12 Shortfin Barracuda submarines that will be built by French shipbuilder DCNS.
