US Navy cruiser Chancellorsville docks in Guam

U.S. Navy’s Ticonderoga-class guided-missile cruiser USS Chancellorsville (CG 62) arrived in Guam for a routine port visit on September 24.

While in Guam, Chancellorsville sailors had the opportunity to experience the culture and take part in morale, welfare and recreation (MWR) events. The crew will also get the chance to interact with the local citizens through a community relations project.

“We are looking forward to our first port call of the patrol,” said Capt. Wilson Marks, Chancellorsville’s commanding officer. “The crew has worked exceptionally hard and deserves some rest and relaxation.”

Guam, the U.S. island territory in Micronesia, is also home to a submarine base located at Polaris Point, Naval Base Guam in Santa Rita, Guam. It hosts four Los Angeles-class attack submarines and two submarine tenders USS Frank Cable (AS 40) and USS Emory S. Land (AS 39).

This year, Guam also hosted the U.S.-only, biennial field training exercise (FTX) Valiant Shield which focuses on integration of joint training in a blue-water environment among U.S. forces. Chancellorsville was one of the units participating in the exercise along with USS Ronald Reagan (CVN 76), nine surface ships and the Bonhomme Richard amphibious ready group with three ships.

Chancellorsville is on patrol with Carrier Strike Group (CSG) 5 supporting security and stability in the Indo-Asia-Pacific region.
