Spanish Navy’s sail training ship Juan Sebastián de Elcano arrived at Praia, the capital city of Cape Verde, following port visits to Lisbon, Portugal and Las Palmas, Canary Islands.
As soon as the ship docked On September 21, a series of protocol activities commenced, starting with the official welcoming ceremony in honor of the Spanish ambassador in Cape Verde.
During the port of call, the ship welcomed students from Praia schools, and the Spanish midshipmen took part in social and sport activities including football and basketball games with members of the Cape Verdean Armed Forces. They were later trained on fire-fighting, navigation and manoeuver techniques.
The four-masted topsail, steel-hulled schooner measures 113 meters (371 ft) in length and is named after the commander of the last exploratory fleet of Ferdinand Magellan. The ship was built in Cadiz, Spain, in 1927.
Last Saturday the Juan Sebastián de Elcano left Praia and is currently sailing towards Brazil.
