Newest Russian nuclear ballistic submarine reaches new home

Vladimir Monomakh, the Russian Navy’s newest strategic nuclear submarine, arrived at its permanent base in Viluchinsk, Kamchatka, on September 26, the Russian Ministry of Defense informed.

The submarine moored at a modern berth, created for submarines of new generations, after performing a transit from the Northern Fleet to the Pacific Fleet.

Vladimir Monomakh is the third Borei-class (Project 955) submarine in service with the Russian Navy. The other two submarines are Yuri Dolgoruky and Alexander Nevsky. Construction of the Vladimir Monomakh began in 2006 while it was handed over to the Russian Navy in 2014.

Back in September 2014, Vladimir Monomakh tested a Bulava ballistic missile from a submerged position from the White Sea to the Kura test site on Russia’s Kamchatka peninsula.

Borei-class submarines are capable of carrying 16 Bulava submarine-launched intercontinental nuclear missiles, carrying 6 to 10 warheads each. The Russian Navy intends to operate a total of 10 Borei-class submarines.

Furthermore, the submarines are fitted with a floating rescue chamber which can accommodate the entire crew and detach in case of an emergency.
