The guided-missile destroyer USS Roosevelt (DDG 80) completed her mid-deployment voyage repairs and pre-selective availability while ported in Manama, Bahrain, Aug. 27.

This maintenance availability enabled Roosevelt to remain on track through the rest of deployment and sustain mission readiness in support of the Optimized Fleet Response Plan (O-FRP). “Having the ability to get repairs and maintenance completed while on deployment that we would normally wait to get accomplished in our homeport is essential to continuing the ship’s mission,” said Chief Warrant Officer 2 Jerry Walker, ship’s maintenance and materials officer.

The time in port consisted of the maintenance team and ship’s force completing jobs, conducting ship checks and documenting additional work requirements. This effort enabled Roosevelt to identify issues that can be resolved during her post-deployment extended maintenance availability.

Identifying these issues early is key in Roosevelt’s sustainability.

“It keeps the ship in optimal material condition, allowing us to stay on track with our schedule in support of the O-FRP,” Walker said.

The shipyard period will contain major changes for Roosevelt, including a ballistic missile defense upgrade, hybrid electric drive and the consolidated afloat networks and enterprise services system installation.

Roosevelt, deployed as part of the Eisenhower Carrier Strike Group (Ike CSG), is supporting maritime security operations and theater security cooperation efforts in the U.S. 5th Fleet area of operations.
