VIDEO: Belgian frigate BNS Leopold I tests barrels off Norway

The Belgian Navy recently shared a video of its multi-purpose frigate BNS Leopold I testing its missile firing capabilities during two international exercises held between June 6 – 16 off the coast of Norway.

Both exercises were designed to test the defensive techniques and anti-ship missiles. Eleven ships from seven NATO countries (Belgium, Denmark, France, Netherlands, Norway, Spain and Turkey) participated in the first exercise in a series of scientific tests to better understand ships’ radar and infrared signatures and improve protection against missile attacks.

During the second week LEOPOLD I participated in the launch exercise “Operation Mjoelner”. In this fictional scenario, the United Nations called in NATO to enforce an arms embargo against a fictional country. This major exercise saw four countries (Belgium, Denmark, Netherlands and Norway) participate with a total of nine vessels (seven frigates and two patrol vessels).

NATO ships fired Boeing’s Harpoon missiles, Raytheon’s Standard Missiles and SeaSparrow Missiles.
