BAE lands USS John P. Murtha post shakedown work

The Naval Sea Systems Command has awarded BAE Systems San Diego Ship Repair a $21.23 million contract for the fitting out availability and the post shakedown availability of Amphibious Landing Platform Dock USS John P. Murtha (LPD 26)

BAE Systems’ obligations include program management, planning, engineering, design and procurement of incidental material in support of the availabilities.

The contract has options which, if exercised, would bring the cumulative value to $61,107,878.

USS John P. Murtha is the 10th San Antonio-class amphibious transport dock to be built by Huntington Ingalls Industries. The ship was delivered to the Navy May 13, 2016.

The 684-foot-long, 105-foot-wide San Antonio-class  amphibious ships are used to transport and land Marines, their equipment and supplies by embarked Landing Craft, Air Cushion (LCAC) or conventional landing craft and Amphibious Assault Vehicles (AAV) augmented by helicopters or vertical take-off and landing aircraft (MV 22).

These ships support amphibious assault, special operations or expeditionary warfare missions and can serve as secondary aviation platforms for amphibious ready groups.
