US Navy, Coast Guard searching for sailor lost off North Carolina

A sailor on board the dock landing ship USS Carter Hall (LSD 50) was reported missing off the coast of North Carolina on April 9.

The sailor was identified as missing at approximately 4:20 p.m. and the ship immediately launched a search and rescue operation.

Several Navy and Coast Guard units are assisting in the effort.

The USS Carter Hall was conducting routine training operations in support of the Dwight D. Eisenhower Carrier Strike Group composite training unit exercise off the coast of Cape Hatteras, North Carolina.

The name of the sailor is being withheld until 24 hours after next-of-kin notification has taken place.

A pair of boots with a note was found Saturday at about 4:20 p.m., Navy Times reported. According to an initial report the news site cited, the Navy is searching for a female third-class petty officer.
