German combat support ship ‘Berlin’ changes command

German Navy combat support ship EGV Berlin is set to hold a change of command ceremony on March 31, 2016, in Wilhelmshaven, Germany.

Frigate Captain Marcel Rosenbohm, who has been the ship’s commander since November, 2012, will be relieved by Frigate Captain Sven Hikele during the ceremony on board the ship.

Looking back at his time as Commander, Rosenbohm said: “Probably the most beautiful time in the life of a Navy officer is now over.

In the previous three years, the crew have proven their skills on an international level in many deployments, EUNAVFOR MED being the most recent one. I am glad to have been able to always return, both the ship and the crew, home uninjured.”

His successor, Frigate Captain Sven Hikele previously served as the Chief Officer of another Berlin-class combat support ship, the EGV Frankfurt am Main.

Berlin’s latest deployment was the EUNAVFOR MED Operation Sophia in the Mediterranean from which the ship returned February 2, 2016.

During her latest deployment, EGV Berlin carried out a total of 37 replenishment at sea maneuvers, thereby supporting ships from Great Britain, Spain, Italy, Belgium and France. A novelty was a RAS with the German minehunter Weilheim, as replenishment oilers only supply ships. The EGV sailed a total of 20.000 nautical miles during her four months of deployment.
