Chinese aircraft carrier jets fly near Korean Peninsula

The Chinese (PLA) Navy only aircraft carrier Liaoning (CV16) conducted at sea training near the Korean Peninsula.

Embarked J-15 fighter jets practiced taking off and landing procedures around the Bohai Strait near the Korean Peninsula, South Korean Yonhap News Agency reported a Chinese military paper saying on Friday, December 25.

The news agency also said the report didn’t reveal the exact date of the drills.

Liaoning is China’s only aircraft carrier, purchased from Ukraine in 1998. The construction of the former Soviet carrier Varyag, now Liaoning, was stopped after the break-up of the Soviet Union.

According to the U.S. Navy, the price tag on the ship was $20 million. The ship later received a refit from the Chinese CSIC Dalian Shipyard and joined the People’s Liberation Navy in 2012.
