Australian Defence Minister visits Austal

The Australian Minister for Defence, Senator Marise Payne, paid a visit to Austal’s Western Australian shipyard on Wednesday, December 16.

The minister toured the shipyard to take a look at the company’s naval vessel design, construction and sustainment capabilities.

The Defence Minister’s delegation, which included Senator Linda Reynolds and Senator Chris Back, was joined by Western Australia Premier, Colin Barnett and Chief of Navy, Vice Admiral Tim Barrett.

The second of two OPV-sized High Speed Support Vessels, designed and constructed by Austal for the Royal Navy of Oman was of special interest to them.

Austal unveiled the first 72-meter HSSV in October this year. The overall contract value for the design, construction and integrated logistics support of the two HSSV’s was US$124.9 million.

The second HSSV is scheduled to be completed in 2016.
