Columbian President Christens Two Submarines

Columbian president Juan Manuel Santos Calderón christened two former German navy Type 206 A submarines in Cartagena, Colombia.

The submarines have been acquired under the Colombian Navy’s modernization plan.

The Type 206 A submarines were upgraded by ThyssenKrupp Marine Systems and will replace two identically named subs, the ARC Intrépido und ARC Indomable, which have been in service in the Carribean for a long time.

The two vessels departed Germany November 11 and reached Cartagena, Colombia, November 27.

The new ships’ sponsors were the Colombian minister María Lorena Gutiérrez Botero and the defence minister’s wife Carmela Restrepo de Villega.
