Streamer Award for German Frigate FGS Mecklenburg-Vorpommern

President Minister of the German federated state Mecklenburg-Vorpommern will award FGS Mecklenburg-Vorpommern with the state’s streamer during a ceremony on December 7.

The ceremony will take place at Passagierkai, Rostock, Germany.

Many armies around the world award battle streamers as a special honoring. According to the German Navy’s press center, battle streamers represent the highest honor a military unit, including ships, can receive.

The state of Mecklenburg-Vorpommern will now have three “maritime partnerships”. It has been maintaining a sponsorship with the First Corvette Squadron and the Seventh Fast-boat Squadron since 2008 and 2012.

The frigate Mecklenburg-Vorpommern was put into service in 1996 and is stationed in Wilhelmshaven, Germany.

The ship’s main duty is submarine hunting. She uses two Sea Lynx embarked helicopters to perform this specific task.

Apart from submarine hunting the ship also has an air-defence capability which she can use for her own defence and for anti-surface warfare.
