HNLMS Groningen Ends Operation Atalanta Deployment

Dutch warship, HNLMS Groningen, completed her three-month deployment with Operation Atalanta off the coast of Somalia on November 27.

During her deployment, HNLMS Groningen conducted counter-piracy patrols as well as joint training with Seychelles maritime forces.

She also provided protection to UN FAO vessel, MV kestrel, during the deployment of Fishing Aggregating Devices (FADs) along the coast of Somalia that will help to improve the catches of local fishermen.

Before she departed the sea area, the ship’s company gathered on the flight deck for an Operation Atalanta medal parade.

HNLMS Groningen is the first Dutch Offshore Patrol Vessel to participate in the EU’s counter-piracy mission. The ship has proven its ability to conduct a range of activities that have served to demonstrate the European Union’s commitment to the region and the strengthening of maritime security.
