Gorch Fock Visits Wilhelmshaven, Germany

German sailing ship SSS Gorch Fock will sail into Wilhelmshaven on Wednesday, November 25.

The ship left its homeport in Kiel 90 days ago with the goal of preparing 226 midshipmen for their future duties. During this time, the white three-mast sailed 5.590 sea miles, 80 % of which was on sail.

Looking back at the time spent at sea, the ship’s commander, Captain Nils Brandt said:

“A highlight of the trip was running into the port of Dartmouth where we visited the Britannia Royal Naval College and embarked eight British Sea Cadets for the transit to Wilhelmshaven, Germany.”

Even when the crew was far away from their homeland, they met other German units at sea. Among others, the crew met the frigate FGS Schleswig-Holstein which was returning from its deployment in the Mediterranean.

An “Open Ship” day onboard the Gorch Fock is planned for November 28 and 29. After that, the ship will move to Wilhelmhaven’s naval arsenal where it will prepare for the planned maintenance.
