Operation Pontus Vessels Rescue 100 off Lybia

Irish patrol vessel LÉ Samuel Beckett assumed the coordinating role in a search and rescue operation which rescued 100 people, 87 kilometres northeast of Tripoli, Libya.

According to the Irish Defence Forces’ press office, LÉ Samuel Beckett, with assistance from the Italian ITS Aliseo and its embarked helicopter, directed the Doctors Without Borders vessel MV Dignity 1 to the location of the migrant ship where the vessel embarked the migrants.

The LÉ Samuel Beckett remained in the patrol area thereafter. The vessel has rescued 562 people since it deployed to Operation Pontus in October, 2015.
