Raytheon Seals U.S. Navy’s SeaRAM Upgrade Contract

The Naval Sea Systems Command has awarded Raytheon a $10 million firm-fixed-price modification under a previous contract for MK 15 Close-In Weapon System (CIWS) SeaRAM upgrades and conversions, system overhauls, and hardware.

CIWS is a fast-reaction terminal defense against low- and high-flying, high-speed maneuvering anti-ship missile threats that have penetrated all other defenses. The CIWS is an integral element of the Fleet Defense In-Depth concept and the Ship Self-Defense Program.

Operating either autonomously or integrated with a combat system, it is an automatic terminal defense weapon system designed to detect, track, engage, and destroy anti-ship missile threats penetrating outer defense envelopes.

The Ship self-defense program is designed for use in aircraft carriers and expeditionary ships. According to Raytheon, the program has been in use for over a decade and is fielded on seven ship classes. SSDS is in service on USS Ronald Reagan, USS Nimitz, USS San Antonio, USS New Orleans and USS Makin Island among others.

Work under the contract will be performed in Tucson, Arizona and Ottobrunn, Germany for the most part and is expected to be completed by September 2017.
