USS Carl Vinson Gets CANES System

The aircraft carrier USS Carl Vinson (CVN 70) completed the installation of its new network infrastructure designed to improve operational efficiency while strengthening security measures and performance on Friday, October 16.

The Consolidated Afloat Network Enterprise Services (CANES) system is the merging and improvement of five shipboard legacy network programs and delivers the common computing environment infrastructure for command, control, communications, computers and intelligence (C4I).

Senior Chief Information Systems Technician Lashala D. Hall, Leading Chief Petty Officer of the Automated Digital Processes Division, said:

CANES light off is essentially when all of the racks are set up and are turned on.

The next step is the software download on our computer systems. This new network infrastructure makes it possible to operate multiple servers on a single computer in a more simple and proficient manner.

The CANES system upgrades represent a key facet of the Navy’s plan for the modernization of information technology across the fleet.

This advance toward standardization is decreasing the amount of network variations throughout the fleet.

Hall continued:

Computer use on board the Vinson will now be top-notch and will better correspond with systems on other ships.

The CANES program will increase the capability of our computer networks and our computer system will be built to reach new limits.

Carl Vinson is undergoing a Chief of Naval Operations (CNO) Planned Incremental Availability (PIA) maintenance period in its homeport of San Diego.
