USS Ronald Reagan Prepares for INSURV

The crew aboard the U.S. Navy’s only forward-deployed aircraft carrier USS Ronald Reagan (CVN 76) began preparations for the 2016 Board of Inspection and Survey (INSURV), Oct. 7.

Ronald Reagan’s INSURV is a required material inspection of 18 functional areas conducted every six years to verify the ship is fit for service to conduct combat operations at sea.

Lt. Cmdr. Alex Simmons, Ronald Reagan’s INSURV coordinator, said:

Our INSURV for Ronald Reagan is scheduled to begin from August 16 – 18, 2016. It’s basically a big zone inspection and spot check of the ship. INSURV is the inspection of a ship’s ability to function, as it’s supposed to, in accordance with Planned Maintenance System (PMS).

The INSURV assist team visited Ronald Reagan to begin phase one of the five-phase INSURV assist team visit. Cletus Strausbaugh, type commander INSURV coordinator explained that phase one typically starts about 10 to 12 months prior to the INSURV.

According to Strausbaugh, an experienced INSURV assist team has been assembled to assist Ronald Reagan to prepare her for INSURV.

Ronald Reagan and its embarked air wing, Carrier Air Wing (CVW) 5, provide a combat-ready force that protects and defends the collective maritime interests of the U.S. and its allies and partners in the Indo-Asia-Pacific region.
