China to Build 4 Submarines for Pakistan in Karachi

Four of Pakistan Navy’s future eight submarines will be constructed in Karachi, Pakistan, according to Pakistani Minister for Defense production, Rana Tanveer Hussain.

As Dawn writes, the Minister confirmed the finalization of the acquisition deal and further stated that China will build four submarines in Karachi, while the other four will be constructed in China.

The Minister added that the construction process is expected to launch simultaneously in both countries. In preparation for the works, China will transfer all necessary technology for submarine production to Karachi.

Details about construction start, as well as the type of submarines being built, were not specified. However, according to Dawn, there are speculations that the submarines in question are of Yuan-class Type-041, diesel-electric submarines.

The eight submarines to be acquired would augment Pakistan’s existing fleet of Agosta 90-B submarines.
