LÉ NIAMH Sails Home from Mediterranean Ops

The Irish Navy’s Patrol Vessel LÉ NIAMH returns from humanitarian and search and rescue operations in the Mediterranean today, October 2.

Commanded by Lieutenant Commander Daniel Wall, the 57 sailors of the LÉ NIAMH, augmented by 2 medics from the Army Medical Corps, deployed on July 10 to the Mediterranean where they successfully rescued 4,127 persons and recovered 39 bodies over 24 operations in cooperation with the Italian Maritime Rescue Co-Ordination Centre.

The LÉ SAMUEL BECKETT has replaced the LÉ NIAMH in the Mediterranean and will continue to provide assistance to persons in distress at sea in accordance with the provisions of international conventions governing search and rescue situations.
