HMS Gloucester Sails to a Scrap Yard in Turkey

Royal Navy’s former HMS Gloucester, the last remaining Type 42 destroyer, has left on a voyage to a scrap yard in Turkey.

The vessel, which was decommissioned after 29 years of service, departed Portsmouth, UK, for the final time today.

These 42 type destroyers are being replaced by the new hi-tech Type 45 destroyers.

HMS Gloucester, known throughout the Fleet as the Fighting G, returned home from her final deployment on May 24, 2011. The ship was retired on June 30, 2011.

Throughout its service the vessel covered almost 788 thousand miles.
