HMS Blyth Visits Namesake Town

Sailors from the Royal Navy’s HMS Blyth headed to the minehunter’s namesake town to celebrate its key Naval role in two world wars – and the strong bond between the ship and the community.

Blyth’s CO Lt Cdr Matt Sykes and six of his ship’s company headed to the Northumbrian coastal town to join local dignitaries in a service of remembrance and thanksgiving.

The port was a key submarine base, while its shipyard refitted or built warships for the Royal Navy – including the first aircraft carrier to be named Ark Royal and the WW2 escort carrier HMS Audacity.

More recently, it’s enjoyed a fruitful 15-year relationship with Faslane-based minehunter HMS Blyth since she entered the water back in 2000.

The ship herself – currently undergoing maintenance – last visited her twin town in 2010.
