USS Springfield’s CO Relieved of Duties

The commanding officer (CO) of the Groton-based Los Angeles-class attack submarine USS Springfield (SSN 761) was relieved of his duties September 4th due to loss of confidence in his ability to command.

Commander Daniel Lombardo was removed from his position by Captain John McGunnigle, Commander, Submarine Squadron 4.

CDR Lombardo has been administratively reassigned to the staff of Commander, Submarine Squadron 4, Groton, Conn.

Capt. Jack Houdeshell, the Deputy Commander at Submarine Squadron 4, has been assigned as commanding officer pending identification of a permanent relief. Capt. Houdeshell previously served as commanding officer of USS Dallas (SSN 700).

Commissioned in January 1993, Springfield is one of 16 submarines homeported in Groton, CT.
