Spanish Navy’s frigate Almirante Juan de Borbón (F-102) has just set sail from Ferrol, Spain to take part in a ballistic missile defense (BMD) exercise along with a US Navy Arleigh Burke-class destroyer off the western coast of Scotland.

The F-102 is the second Alvaro de Bazán-class frigate equipped with the US AEGIS combat system.

The purpose of the deployment is to check the new capability to detect and track ballistic missiles.

Subsequently the Spanish warship will participate in the At Sea Demonstration 2015 (ASD-15) exercise with other naval units from Canada, USA, France, the Netherlands, Italy, Norway and the United Kingdom.

During the ASD-15 the Almirante Juan de Borbón will contribute to the multinational ballistic missile defense system and will also launch a missile against a conventional air target.
