HII to Lay Keel for US Navy’s New Sub

Huntington Ingalls Industries will hold a keel laying ceremony for US Navy’s new submarine.

The ceremony will be held on May 16 at HII’s Newport News Shipbuilding site.

The contract to build USS Indiana (SSN-789), a Virginia-class submarine, was awarded to Huntington Ingalls Industries in partnership with the Electric Boat division of General Dynamics in Newport News, Virginia on 22 December 2008. This ship is the sixth of the Block III subs which will feature a revised bow, including some technology from Ohio-class SSGNs.

This event will mark the ceremonial beginning of construction on Indiana (SSN 789), the 16th Virginia-class submarine.

Virginia-class submarines have the capability to attack targets ashore with highly accurate Tomahawk cruise missiles and conduct covert long-term surveillance of land areas, littoral waters and other sea-based forces. Other missions include anti-submarine and anti-ship warfare. It is also designed for Special Forces delivery and support.
