USS Carl Vinson Departs US 5th Fleet. Heads Home

Authorities

After a six month deployment, the USS Carl Vinson (CVN 70) has been effectively relieved from the U.S. 5th Fleet area of operations supporting Operation Inherent Resolve by the USS Theodore Roosevelt (CVN 71).

On April 13, 2015, the two carriers pulled side by side and the thorough turnover process commenced involving multiple briefings and the transfer of supplies essential in support of Operation Inherent Resolve.

Carl Vinson has been engaged in this deployment since October 2014, the longest officially scheduled since the Vietnam era. The vessel’s Sailors took part in Operation Inherent Resolve, maritime security operations, strike operations in Iraq and Syria as directed, and theater security cooperation efforts in the region.

As the vessel heads home to San Diego, it will keep vigilant and on a steady course, ready to intervene if anything else should arise that needs the ship’s support.
