TR Welcomes Distinguished Visitors in Portsmouth

US Navy’s Nimitz-class aircraft carrier USS Theodore Roosevelt (CVN 71) hosted high-level government and military officials for a day at sea as part of the Navy’s distinguished visitor program while in Portsmouth, England, March 22, 2015.

Commander, U.S. Naval Forces Europe-Africa/Commander, Joint Force Command Naples Adm. Mark Ferguson hosted United Kingdom Secretary of State for Defence Michael Fallon, Finland Minister of Defence Carl Haglund, Sweden Minister for Defence Peter Hultqvist and 21 others visited the aircraft carrier.

The visit offered guests an opportunity to gain a greater understanding of carrier operations at sea and served to enhance the relationships between the countries’ military forces.

During the visit, guests observed flight operations which included catapult launches, an in-air refueling demonstration and arrested landings. Guests received a brief on how Sailors organize, direct and move aircraft around the 4-and-a-half acre flight deck, as well as a brief on the ship’s navigational systems.

U.S. Naval Forces Europe-Africa, headquartered in Naples, Italy, oversees joint and naval operations, often in concert with allied, join, and interagency partners, in order to advance U.S. national interests and security and stability in Europe and Africa.
