Spanish Navy’s Canarias Saves Four Castaways

Spanish Navy’s frigate SPS Canarias (F86) saved four North African castaways after their boat capsized in the Strait of Gibraltar.

The Navy vessel deployed to the scene of the incident after midnight, as soon as they received the call for support. It took them an hour and a half to locate the inflatable boat and rescue the people. Due to bad weather conditions, a tug which was sent to transfer the rescued castaways to safety was forced to abort its mission.

Canarias, carrying the rescued people, arrived to Rota Naval Base on Friday, March 6. The people had symptoms of mild hypothermia and minor injuries.
