UK, Sweden Strengthen Bonds

The Head of the Royal Swedish Navy, Rear Admiral Jan Thörnqvist, has paid a visit to the UK, strengthening bonds between the two maritime nations.

Adm Thörnqvist visited Clyde, Devonport and Portsmouth Naval Bases as well as Navy Command Headquarters.

At HM Naval Base Clyde the Admiral was given an overview of the work carried out on site as well as a tour of HMS Astute followed by an introduction to 43 Commando Royal Marines.

During his time at HMNB Devonport the Admiral witnessed a Thursday War hosted by Flag Officer Sea Training (FOST).

In Portsmouth he toured Type 45 destroyer HMS Defender which is currently undergoing a maintenance and regeneration period for contingent tasking.

Defender’s Commanding Officer, Commander Stephen Higham, showed the Admiral around his new warship.

The visit allowed the Swedish contingent to see first hand the capabilities of the Royal Navy as they look to expand their own maritime forces.
