Spanish Navy’s Submarine Service Celebrates 100th Anniversary

The Spanish Navy Submarine Service celebrated its 100th anniversary on February 17.

The Navy commemorated the signing of the Miranda Law on February 17th 1915 when King Alfonso XIII authorized the Minister of the Navy –Admiral Augusto Miranda– to procure up to four submarines with the necessary support and training material, as well as a special rescue ship.

A series of festivities were organized in Cartagena, the Submarine Service’s home base. On February 12th Cartagena hosted the ‘Submarine Veteran’s Day’ followed by NATO’s Annual Conference of Submarine Commanders held in the Submarine Base Headquarters. Today an exhibition of pictures, photographs and model ships will be inaugurated in Cartagena Naval Museum. Also several conferences were scheduled in different venues.
