Royal Navy’s First Sea Lord Tours Chinese Ship in Portsmouth

The Royal Navy’s First Sea Lord has paid a visit to a Chinese assault ship during its stay in Portsmouth.

Admiral Sir George Zambellas was given a tour of Chang Bai Shan which is one of three Chinese Naval ships visiting the city’s naval base for five days.

He was hosted by Rear Admiral Zhang Chuanshu, commander of the Chinese task group.

The assault ship, along with frigate Yun Cheng and replenishment vessel Chaohu, are in Portsmouth to enhance military understanding between the UK and China.

The vessels have just completed counter piracy escort operations in the Gulf of Aden and are staying in the UK before heading to Kiel in Germany.

Senior officers from both Navies have taken the opportunity to discuss various maritime topics including recent counter-piracy operations across the Indian Ocean.
