The U.S. Department of Energy (DOE) recognized the US Navy as a recipient of the 2014 Federal Energy and Water Management Awards, Dec. 9.
Capt. Tony Edmonds, Naval Facilities Engineering Command (NAVFAC) Washington commanding officer and Naval District Washington(NDW) regional engineer, and Lt. Cmdr. Keith Benson, NDW and NAVFAC Washington energy officer, accepted the national award during a ceremony held at the National Archives and Records Administration in Washington D.C.
This year, the DOE recognized 25 winners across the federal government as recipients of the 2014 Federal Energy and Water Management Awards. The annual awards highlight exceptional federal agency efforts for improving the nation’s energy, water, aviation and vehicle fleets. Each winner deployed cutting-edge practices that will significantly cut carbon pollution, protect the environment, and strengthen national security.
In 2013, Naval District Washington built the foundation for a comprehensive energy program. The program focuses on five energy pillars: energy culture, energy information, energy efficiency, renewable energy and alternative fuels and energy security. Five teams were established to enhance energy leadership with the focus on optimizing retro-commissioning projects, identifying potential renewable energy opportunities, collecting and analyzing data on fuel consumption, installing advanced metering, and deploying smart grids that enable technologies to monitor, control and respond to building and utility management systems.
NAVFAC Washington continues to lead the charge on energy program initiatives. Across the region’s six installations, energy intensity was reduced by 19 percent and water intensity by 13 percent. The program created 50 megawatts of renewable energy opportunity and brought the total of advanced metering infrastructure to 99 percent installed with 37 percent actively connected.
Naval District Washington’s program forms the basis of its energy policy and fundamentally empowers all employees to use energy resources efficiently all the time.
