EUNAVFOR German Frigate FGS Luebeck Visits Madagascar

The Republic of Madagascar welcomed the EU Naval Force German frigate, FGS Luebeck, and her crew in to the port of Antsiranana on Monday, 24 November.

As a German warship has not visited Madagascar for some time, the German Ambassador, His Excellency Harald Gehrig and FGS Lubeck’s Commanding Officer, Commander Semrau, took the opportunity to invite Government and military representatives on board.

After being welcomed on board, the Commander in Chief of the Armed Forces and the Commander in Chief of the Naval Forces of Madagascar were given a briefing on the EU Naval Force, Operation Atalanta, including its important role protecting World Food Programme (WFP) vessels from pirate attack as they transit the Somali coast to deliver aid to displaced persons in Somalia. The VIP visitors were also given a guided tour of the warship.

Speaking during the visit, Commander Semrau stated:

The German Navy is a major contributor to the European Union’s commitment to maritime security in the Gulf of Aden and along the Somali coast. We value the cooperation, training and exchange of information that takes place with our allies and nations in the region.

In the evening, Ambassador Gehrig and Commander Semrau hosted more guests on board during their official reception. The ship’s crew was given the opportunity to meet guests from the military, government and industry.
