Authorities

KD Perantau 151, a Malaysian Navy’s hydrography ship, sank partially at the Boustead Naval Shipyard Sdn Bhd in Lumut, Perak.

The vessel was docked at the shipyard for maintenance works when it started taking on water in the lower part. The incident occurred in the late hours of November 18, supposedly during an attempt to remove its one-tonne generator set, as New Straits Times Online writes.

According to a statement by the Malaysian Navy, the vessel entered the shipyard on November 10 for refit operations which were scheduled to end until August 10, 2015.

No injuries were reported and an investigation board will look into the cause of the incident.

Star Online quoted a navy spokesperson as saying that “efforts are being conducted to rescue the vessel from sinking.”

Designed and equipped for hydrographic survey and meteorology and oceanography observation, KD Perantau, was built at the Hong Leong-Lursen Shipyard in Penang and commissioned on Oct 12, 1998.
